Today, August 19, the world celebrates the day of the orangutans. For the couple – a 28-year-old female’s Flora and 12-year-old male Żory who have recently arrived in Kharkov from a French zoo, this day coincided with the end of the quarantine.
As reported in the Kharkov zoo, now they have become full inhabitants of the sector of the planet of the apes.
“They continue to develop new housing. And if flora prefers quiet games and relaxation in secluded places, then Jora, like a real teenager, all the while in motion. He likes to move on ropes, play with water. Flora sometimes supports such activity, but most reasons them out of his friend,” – said in a zoo.
According to the Rangers, flora and George are similar only in one thing – they are happy to explore the aviary to find a variety of snacks. For example, berries, nuts or seeds. Most often they hide in cracks of bark on trees.
“They love broccoli, avocados, tomatoes, sweet pepper, iceberg lettuce, and Radichio. Once a week they are given eggs as well as morning and evening (for 2 litres), to them give to drink tea with honey. In General, the diet of orangutans consists of fruits and vegetables”, – explained the caretakers for the animals.
Notably, the average lifespan of orangutans is about 30 years, but in captivity this figure increases. The record was set by a resident of the zoo in Perth (Australia). Had to put her down in 2018, when she was 62 years old.
The entrance to the zoo will be absolutely free, and the animals settle in close to the visitors: humans and animals will share the only natural obstacles. The zoo will set up 14 different zones. It also will build the aquarium.
