A psychologist told how to adapt children to the new rules in kindergarten

Психолог рассказала, как адаптировать детей к новым правилам в детском саду

On may 25, kindergartens began to operate the new rules, approved by the Ministry of health. And on June 1 they will enter into force in kindergartens in Kiev, which will open following the easing of quarantine.

You need to understand that new restrictions can be stressful for children and cause negative emotions. Therefore, caregivers should not only monitor compliance with the new requirements, but also to help children to adapt to them.

“We’re not going to expect from kids that they’ll be able to keep a distance, not to play with each other, do not touch, play soft toys, sit on chairs. The task of children this age – role-play, sensory-motor development. To run, to scream, to try different materials and in active play with each other, learn the rules and roles. We can’t deprive a child of something without offering in return of equal value”, – says family psychologist Svetlana roiz in the comments of the New Ukrainian school.

In order to facilitate the adaptation process, the psychologist was prepared for educators a collection of tips that will help to return children to kindergarten after the quarantine.

How to work with children’s emotions

The children will probably return to the gardens more anxious, aggressive and “disinhibited”. To those who have no brothers or sisters, you may experience increased sensitivity to loud sounds, fatigue due to the large number of contacts.

Children who are experiencing violence may show its effects: increased aggression, difficulties with concentration.

Preschoolers are difficult to adhere to many rules and prohibitions, therefore, possible protests, tantrums, emotional explosions. It is therefore important to explain to children their feelings, talk to them about the possible emotions and reactions, to encourage, to draw attention to their successes and achievements.

You can, for example, to assure them that they are real superheroes of health, as well cope with all the rules and restrictions. Explain that all emotions are important and useful. But our behavior when we experience an emotion, can be acceptable or unacceptable.

You can explore with the children different emotions. It is important to emphasize the fact that all emotions can help us be more secure and in touch with the world. Even fear, by which we become more cautious and careful.

In addition, together with the children can draw emotions, e.g. happy and sad face. To their children to indicate when happy or upset.

How to discuss with children the new rules

Podkarantinnoy period should start with a discussion of the new rules. Keep in mind that the children are sure to be some return to the period of adaptation, the knowledge regime and the perception of reality of the garden. To help the child to get used to the new rules using the game format. For example, at the first meeting you may invite them to become “superheroes”, who learn about life on a new planet. For example, you can say: “all superheroes have a secret mission. Your secret missions are: to wash hands, use sanitizer…”

To formulate the rules is: “care Superheroes”, “Superheroes can” instead of “We should”. In order to help children to learn to keep your distance, ask them to imagine that everyone has an invisible protective suit on the distance of outstretched hands, which can’t be touched.

Every day the children will test superhero health, that is, to measure the temperature. Tell that to the pupils and show the toys how it will happen. Explaining the rules, focus on the fact that adults are not allowed in the spacecraft. After all, you need to warn the children that the parents no longer come into the room the group. You can even come up with a special way of farewell.

How to facilitate adaptation and reduce anxiety

Contact yesterday in an online format. It would be ideal if before you arrange a few meetings children ZOOM.

The first day in the garden be sure to perform the “tour”. Remind me where I need to be naked, where is the restroom, and bedroom, to “fix” every baby crib and drawer for clothes.

In the first week all classes must be one-third shorter. The stronger children will be tired and can be noisy, overactive, or, conversely, inhibited and anxious.

If during the quarantine the children was replaced by the teacher, they should be warned in advance. Very well, if eve greeting online call kids will see your picture (send your parents a photo with a friendly glance or a smile).

In the kindergarten educator will be in masks, so children will be guided only by the voice and intonation, so it is important to see your face the day before, to identify and establish contact. You can pre-prepare the room for the group. For example, to make an exhibition, to hang on different surfaces collages with photos of children and their drawings (ask parents to bring fresh work). This will help the child to feel that the space already explored and safe.

It’s important to create rituals of greeting and farewell. Very well, if it’s well-known songs, little poems or touching, which are now safe. In the period of adaptation with children it is important to use the theme of the house.

The metaphor of the house gets the children a sense of security. You can draw houses, make origami, houses made of boxes, chairs, cubes, Legos.

Talk with parents about the rules of adaptation. Answer questions about the safety of children, tell us about the new rules, which will be implemented. After all, the less anxiety the parents, the easier the child adapts. Encourage parents to say goodbye to the child to come up with a ritual that would remind the baby of the family: the sticker on the handle, strap or the picture in the pocket.

How to compensate for the lack of tactile interaction

Work with dough, clay and felt does not replace, but somewhat compensates for the lack of tactile contact. If the health Ministry does not recommend the use of these materials, they can be replaced by cereals, kinetic sand, easy origami schemes or individual sets of clay or finger paints.

Kids can start to worry stronger than in the “quiet hours”. If health standards allow, encourage parents to bring from home a small blanket or large scarf that the child could wrap it while you sleep.

These things will serve as a temporary substitute soft toy will soothe babies and give them a sense of comfort.
