Americans ‘ love of sedans is over: their sales fell by half

The automotive preferences of Americans are all too familiar: they love pickup trucks and sedans. But the world is changing, and the US market, too: if the pickups continue to gain momentum, the demand for “chetyrehdverki” fell two times in the last ten years.

The research portal the Truth About Cars applies primarily to midsize sedans: their market share fell from 16% in 2009 to 8% in 2019 and continues to decline. Three quarter of 2019, the demand for such cars decreased by 7%.

Sales of all large sedans are falling. The exceptions were the Ford Fusion (a car known as the Mondeo) – for many years it remained one of the outsiders of the segment, and a small surge of consumer interest may be associated with the imminent demise.

The decrease in demand for the Hyundai Sonata, Subaru Legacy and Mazda 6 achieved double-digit magnitude, and Volkswagen Passat and did set a record of minus 61%.

Market leaders are also gradually losing ground. Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and Nissan Altima was recently refreshed, but it did not help them to retain customers: in total, they lost 22,000 customers in the first nine months of 2019. And this despite the fact that the total share of the Trinity in the segment of midsize sedans has grown from 56% in 2018 to 59% in 2019.

According to preliminary estimates, all three Japanese sedan will show at the end of 2019 one of the worst statistics of sales for last 20 years. At the same time without reference to the dynamics of sales is still impressive: only one Toyota Camry in the U.S. was expected to sell 340,000 units by the end of this year.
