The Ukrainian foreign Ministry has expressed disappointment over the termination of the Treaty on the elimination of intermediate-range and shorter-range. At the same time, the MFA notes that the agreement is terminated due to the actions of Russia, and the USA was a necessary step.
The contract on liquidation of rockets for three decades was one of the key elements of strategic stability and security in the world, said the Ministry.
Ukraine together with the United States condemned the development and the test of Russian ballistic missile RS-26 “Rubezh” in the range of about 2,200 km, and the expansion of military characteristics of the operational-tactical missile complex “Iskander-M”.
The foreign Ministry also stressed that Ukraine is particularly concerned about the information that Russia has developed and deployed nuclear missile system of average range, in range, of which there are some European capital, as well as due to the holding in March of 2019 in the occupied Crimea military exercises with the use of complex “Iskander-M”.
In response to Russia’s aggressive actions and taking into account the termination of the INF Treaty , Ukraine will intensify its dialogue with NATO to discuss possible ways to strengthen the defense of the whole Eastern flank of the Alliance.
Why did the “missile conflict” between Russia and the United States? The Treaty on the elimination of intermediate-range and shorter-range was signed by Mikhail Gorbachev and Ronald Reagan in Washington on 8 December 1987, during the Soviet-American summit. The Treaty provides that the U.S. and Russia refuse from the production, use and storage of ballistic missiles, ground-based medium (from 1 thousand to 5.5 thousand km) and small (from 500 to 1 thousand kilometers) range.
For the first time Pompeo has announced the US intention to withdraw from the Treaty in December 2018, if Russia within 60 days will not revert to its implementation. The ultimatum of the United States ended on Saturday, February 2.
President Donald trump made a statement that Russia, with impunity, violated the Treaty. He accused the Russian Federation in the secret development of a proscribed missile system, which is a direct threat to US allies and American forces abroad.”
The first reports about the violation by Russia of the Treaty were made during the presidency of Barack Obama in 2012, but no official statements regarding this, then, was not announced. In 2016, Russia has deployed missile complexes “Iskander” capable of carrying a nuclear warhead, to the borders of the EU and NATO – in the Kaliningrad region between Poland and Lithuania.
For its part, Moscow insists that the launchers of the European missile defense system (which is already available in Romania and is built in Poland) the “MK-41” in the case of a minor adaptation can be used to launch cruise missiles “Tomahawk”. However, right now Americans exists only in marine version.
