The Chinese division of General Motors introduced a new compact sedan Onix, which in the future will become a global model.
If in North America and Europe, General Motors suffered a defeat in the mass segment of cars and is almost gone from it, in China and South America cheap selaniki and hatchbacks continue to bring her a profit. In Brazil, for example, last year an absolute bestseller was the subcompact Onix hatchback – sold 210 458 copies, while in China the most successful model of Chevrolet is a compact sedan Cavalier – sold 252 108 pieces (13 place in the ranking of top selling new cars).
This week’s Brazilian subsidiary, GM announced that the name Onix will be global and Chinese published the first photograph of Onyx the new generation, which actually turned out to be slightly turned compact sedan Cavalier sample of 2016, and the Chinese consumer website, Chevrolet new, too, is placed in a section of Cavalier. In fact, in China, the presentation of the Onyx is already over, and the local media, in particular xcar.com.cn visited it, however, the interior is classified. Public new Onix went into a spectacular sports body kit Redline black 16-inch alloy wheels, but with drum rear brakes. Outside from Cavalier it is basically just new lighting and a slightly increased false radiator grille.
New official information about the technique after the publication of a teaser at the beginning of this week, unfortunately, has not appeared, but the Chinese colleagues, who have glanced under the bottom of the machine, say that it is still a Cavalier, not a completely new model, according to GM. Recall that the Cavalier is built on a shortened platform of Chevrolet Cruze Delta from the first generation and has a wheelbase of 2600 mm.
The same base – Onyx, but the length (4474 mm) it 70 mm shorter than the Cavalier, and the width decreased by 49 mm to 1730 mm. Height, on the contrary, increased by 4 mm to 1471 mm. All these insignificant dimensional adjustments needed obviously in order to accurately position the Onix closely the Chinese model range of Chevrolet, where now there are already three of the compact sedan Cruze, Monza and, in fact, Onix, and Cavalier, which formally Onix came, too, most likely at some time late in the product line.
It is known that Chinese Onix will be offered with two petrol engines to choose from: atmospheric capacity 1.3 liter (103 HP) and a supercharged volume of 1.0 liter (116 HP). About gearboxes yet no information.
In the sale of Onix will be available in summer this year and it is expected that it will cost a little cheaper than the Cavalier, which is now asking at least 79 900 yuan ($12 000).
