A leading role in the carnival is usually played by representatives of the British Afro-Caribbean community, particularly people from the Islands of Trinidad and Tobago, which accounted for a significant portion of residents of Kensington and Chelsea in the 1950s.

The largest street carnival in Europe is held annually in Notting hill in North-West London, since 1964, collects more than a million Britons and tourists from around the world.
