Doctors under the leadership of Stacy Lindau University of Chicago conducted a study and found that dementia (dementia) does not preclude sexual activity of older people.
In experiment have taken part more than 3 million Americans aged 62 to 91 years, says the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.
They were asked to undergo a test to determine cognitive functions. Also, the participants collected socio-demographic data (gender, age, ethnicity, education level, and marital status) and asked to fill out questionnaires concerning their sexual life. Those who have within the last year had at least one sexual intercourse were considered sexually active.
Dementia does not affect the sexual life of the elderly
The results showed that 27% of the participants suffered from cognitive impairment, and 18 percent have a dementia. 46% of men and 18% of women with dementia was sexually active.
Most men are or have been married or lived with a partner, the figure for women is 57%. However, regardless of age and cognitive function in 77 percent of participants had at least one problem with sexual dysfunction.
The conclusion of scientists is: dementia does not prevent the elderly to remain sexually active.
