The European Union welcomes the democratic development in Ukraine, but in the process of implementing the reforms, advises to hold the balance between their speed and efficiency.
This is stated in the message which extended a press-the Secretary of the European Commission Maya Kosyanchich on the outcome of the 5th meeting of the Association Committee EU – Ukraine on Tuesday in Brussels.

“The EU welcomes the renewed and ambitious impetus to the reforms, reflecting the expectations of the citizens of Ukraine, in particular, in such areas as the rule of law, fight against corruption, and economic issues that directly affect everyday life in Ukraine. The EU is aware of the expectations (of Ukraine – ed.) to achieve quick results, but recalls that speed and efficiency must always go around, accompanied by inclusive legal process”, – stated in the message.
The European side noted that the meeting of the Committee of the Association has allowed the EU and Ukraine to take stock of the implementation of the Association Agreement and to prepare for the meeting of the Association Council, to be held in the next months.
It is also noted that today was the first meeting of the Committee of the Association after the presidential and parliamentary elections in Ukraine, which provided a good opportunity to exchange views with representatives of the new government.
The delegation worked under the leadership of Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kuleba and Deputy Director General of the European external action service for Europe and Central Asia Luc Devine.
“The EU welcomed the significant progress made in the past several months in many areas. Emphasis was placed on the importance of legal reforms, in particular, in the system of the Prosecutor’s office and the security Service. They also discussed actions to improve the investment climate and accelerate progress in specific sectors. The Association agreement, including deep and comprehensive free trade area, is a road map of reforms and the process of political Association and economic integration of Ukraine with the EU”, – the document says.
It is also noted the important role that Ukraine plays in the development of civil society. The European side confirmed its continued support of Ukraine in the sphere of reforms, including by providing technical and financial assistance.
The EU recalled that Ukraine has received is unprecedented for any third-country package of European aid – 15 billion euros in 2014, and stressed that this assistance is related to the continuation of reforms in key areas such as decentralization and administrative reform.
The European Union also took the opportunity to confirm support for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders.
“The EU continues to condemn the illegal annexation of Crimea and Sevastopol by Russia and will remain committed to its policy of non-recognition, including the application of restrictive measures… the European Union welcomes the strong support from the Ukrainian side a meaningful and peaceful solution to the conflict in Eastern Ukraine and its efforts aimed at the full implementation of the Minsk agreements, and calls upon Russia and the military units that it supports, to act in the same way”, – stated in the document of the European Union.
