Exercise can reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease

Физические упражнения могут снизить риск развития болезни Альцгеймера

Scientists from Queen University and Federal University of Rio de Janeiro said that irisin protein, which is produced during exercise, neutralizes the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. As reported by Naked science, in the study, researchers conducted experiments on mice.

Previous studies have shown that exercise helps improve memory and cognitive function. Now scientists have suggested that physical activity can reverse the effects of Alzheimer’s disease.

In the study, biologists first examined samples of brain tissue of healthy people and those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. They noticed that in all samples was present in the hippocampus irisin, but in the second case, its concentration was much lower.

The researchers then moved on to experiments in mice. For a start, they measured the content irisin in the hippocampus of healthy mice, increasing memory has improved, and by lowering deteriorated. After the researchers looked at how the increase irisin impact on beta-amyloid – peptides, which initiate the process of formation of amyloid plaques, serving one of the factors of dementia in Alzheimer’s disease. For five weeks, mice with beta-amyloid swam five days a week for one hour daily. Thus, they were not observed memory impairments. When irisin chemically blocked, the voyage has not brought the same effect.
