Experts spoke about the impact of alcohol on the brain.
An international team of scientists examined the health of more than 9 million Britons aged 35 to 55 years, who pre-interviewed about alcohol consumption from 1985 to 1993. Almost 20 years later, researchers found that almost 400 participants 70 years of age, developed dementia.
In the study, the researchers also took into account other factors that could affect the health of the participants: age, gender, ethnicity, profession, social status and education. As it turned out, the drinkers likely to develop dementia 1.5 times more than drink alcohol in moderation (1 glass of wine or 2 glasses of beer a day).
It should be noted that alcohol abuse also increases the chances of developing dementia. Among the drinkers in excess of the likelihood of developing dementia increases by 17% with each glass of beer, and those who suffered from severe alcohol intoxication (hangover) – right 400%.
With such a conclusion, not everyone agrees. Leading experts in the neurodegenerative disorders considered in the study of the surface. Sarah Imarisio, an expert on Alzheimer’s disease, drew attention to the fact that scientists did not consider the category of people who had problems with alcohol dependence.
But the problem, according to the authors of the study was not to identify causal relationships between alcohol consumption and neurodegenerative disorders, and to develop a statistical data for further research.
They point out that alcohol causes the development of diseases such as cancer, ischemia, atherosclerosis, cardiomyopathy, disrupted the endocrine system and adrenal glands.
