A new study published in the JAMA Network Open, suggests that typical for Western countries, fast food leads to lower sperm count in men.
In particular, scientists have linked products such as chips and pizza with reduced semen quality. Simultaneously, a more clean diet with lots of fruits and vegetables have the opposite effect.
Scientists say that sperm quality has declined consistently the past decade. The analysis of more than 185 studies, they found a decrease of 50-60% in Western countries in the period from 1973 to 2011. The first signs of decline are recorded with the 40-ies of the last century.
According to scientists, over the last 50 years, the average diet of Western man has changed dramatically. There are more processed foods, increased the number of calories consumed. All this, coupled with unfavorable environmental conditions can lead to reduced fertility in men.
