Nineteenth June 2020 Damen Shipyards Group and the German Federal office for armaments, information technology and maintenance (BAAINBw) has signed a contract for the construction of four frigates MKS 180 for German Navy.
Thus, Damen officially became the Prime contractor for the programme together with partners from Thales and Blohm+Voss.
The signing of the contract marks the beginning of the design phase and construction of the frigate. Earlier, the Union announced the winner of the tender on June 17, the budget Committee of the Bundestag has allocated the necessary funds.
MKS 180 is one of the most important programs of the German Navy. It is assumed that the future ship will be able to deal effectively with the surface, underwater, ground and air targets, also used for reconnaissance and combat pirates, writes navalnews.
