Creating chips is a complex process that requires not only great intellectual cost, but also time. Traditionally, the design people are doing, but Google went ahead and trained algorithm to design circuits on the chip. The result exceeded all expectations.
Modern integrated circuits have a three-dimensional structure, which greatly complicates the task of their design. Because of the long process of creating a new chip may become obsolete even before production starts. In most cases, chips can remain relevant from two to five years. Google engineers created an algorithm that can find the optimal solution of the problem, which usually employs dozens of professionals.
“We believe that AI will shorten the development cycle of the chip, creating a symbiotic relationship with the hardware, where each contributes to the progress of the other” – sharing their thoughts, Google representatives.
According to the company’s employees, their algorithm can determine the best location of thousands of components in modern chip. The optimal version is issued promptly after the analysis of millions of potential variants. Google are confident that their development can ensure the continued fulfillment of Moore’s law, according to which every two years the number of transistors should increase twice.
