Georgy Zhukov – a very controversial figure in world history, the role which argue from generation to generation. Some consider him a great military leader who made an enormous contribution to the victory in the great Patriotic war, while others – the brutal butcher. In Odessa, the history of which bugs have contributed, the debate resumed with new force after activists dismantled his bas-relief from the wall of the Primorsky military.
So what actually Georgy Zhukov – hero or butcher? In search of an answer to this question, we can safely come to the conclusion that it depends on the Outlook and political views. If you are the Soviet Union – it is a fantastic country, which gave the apartment, flew into space, and buying bread for 20 kopecks – it is likely for you Zhukov is “Marshal of the Victory”. If the Tips are limited to repression, the Gulag, executions and sitting on the bones of Stalin – then the bugs in your eyes will be a bloody tyrant.
The name Zhukov is being manipulated and politicians who, depending on their electoral support or condemn the Marshal. Do the same historians, argue their application to only those facts that are beneficial to them, or even false evidence.
“On*Rena equip and arm the Ukrainians?”
If you have already started talking about history, one should understand that myths, speculation and outright lies, coming from the fans of Zhukov and his critics. According to the author, the cause of love and hatred lies in the fact, Zhukov is probably the main symbol of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany.
We give a vivid example of lies and the reason for his hate in Ukraine, especially the adherents of nationalism.
There is a theory that during the operation for the crossing of the Dnieper in 1943 Georgy Zhukov ordered to arm the recruits halves of a brick. In this form the soldiers and threw on heavily armed Germans. During debates at the headquarters of Zhukov supposedly said: “Why are we, friends, is the head fool. On*Rena equip and arm the Ukrainians? They are all traitors! The more in the river flood, the less will have to Siberia after the war, exile”.
This quote fell on the fertile soil of Ukrainian nationalism, and bearing fruit to this day. Opponents Zhukov appealed this sentence, arguing that the Marshal wasn’t just a cruel cynic who spat on people’s lives, and hated Ukrainians. This time quoting historians on the type of Viatrovych, politicians, activists, journalists.
But who told the terrible truth about Ukrainophobia beetles? The original and allegedly a witness to this conversation was Yuri Kononenko, who served as an orderly and an officer for special assignments at General Vatutin and allegedly attended the meeting. But as it turned out, Yuri Kononenko rather was the grandson of Baron Munchausen. He told me that he personally took the surrender of Paulus at Stalingrad. There, in Stalingrad, he received a bullet in the heart, but it successfully shrank and missed the bullet, without hurting himself, and this came personally to Stalin, which Kononenko drinking on the brotherhood. And he re Zhukov in Stalingrad in front of other officers. Should I believe this source? Some would say Yes, as even in respected national publications have published stories Kononenko.
Operation “Mars” and 23 days before the end of the war
There is another side of the coin. Supporters of Zhukov does not question leadership talent Marshal and vehemently defending their point of view. However, the questions to Zhukov there.
From November to December 1924 Zhukov led the Rzhev-Sychevka strategic offensive operation or operation “Mars” with the purpose of defeating the German 9th army. However, the operation failed in the attack Rzhev perished thousands of Soviet soldiers. Zhukov himself in his memoirs admits that the outcome of this offensive operation was unsatisfactory. Various historians and eyewitnesses of the events, tried to justify the commander, but most likely, this was done in order to rehabilitate the credibility of Zhukov.
Berlin offensive is another controversial page in the history. The operation lasted 23 days and became the final chord of the second world war, ending with the total surrender of Germany. There is a perception that Soviet commanders were in a hurry to finish, not sparing their own soldiers – then the question who was the first to take Berlin – the Red army or the allied forces. Naturally, among the commanders was Zhukov. Many condemn him for what he sent to death many soldiers for the capture of the German capital, but a real “grinder” occurred on the outskirts of Berlin at the Seelow heights. What exactly they were? This is about dvadtsatikilometrovaya ridge of quite steep hills with a height of 40-50 meters to the East of Berlin. On them, the Wehrmacht was equipped with a dense line of defense. They were protected by a tank corps, five divisions with armored vehicles. A natural barrier was not only height, but also numerous irrigation canals. Soviet troops struck in the forehead, which led to many deaths.
Still, the hero or executioner?
You can endlessly cite examples of myths and speculation. In the memoirs of us General Dwight Eisenhower, Zhukov attributed the quote, emphasizing the relationship of the Marshal to numerous losses in their ranks: “Russian women still give birth”. However, this phrase is even credited with the galaxy of Russian emperors, which casts doubt on the words of Eisenhower. Some argue that Zhukov won only unceremoniously and with numerical superiority, while others claim that when planning operations, he tried to minimize losses. The Marshal’s opponents criticize him for an order in the defense of Leningrad, which said that retreating soldiers will be shot along with their families, as supporters of Zhukov argue that it applies only to the deserters. And then there are wild stories about the soldiers, of whom thousands were sent under a mushroom cloud, “Trophy case” and more.
And numbers, numbers and numbers… They are being manipulated the most. For example, for a particular operation have different data about the forces and losses: Soviet, German, post-war, later, and so on. In this variation on the exact figures, however. And manipulators take the data that is of benefit to them, and sometimes twisting the information.
However, Zhukov was faced with speculation during his lifetime. His fame played him a bad joke – generals and officials denounced the Marshal, and believe each of them, no reason. Largely this was done because of envy or fear of the Marshal. However, for the same reason Stalin sent Zhukov to Odessa, so they could not be measured with the popularity of its leader.
Definitely about Georgy Zhukov we can say that it was a tough and strong-willed man, who doesn’t recognize someone else’s authority. He was one of the few who could contradict Stalin. And Yes, Georgy Zhukov – “Marshal of the Victory”. What good he achieved it – it’s up to each of you.
