How to use smartphone to increase the risk of obesity

A new study by scientists from Columbia showed that people who used smartphones have 43% increased risk of obesity.

Researchers from the Simon Bolivar University conducted an analysis of thousands of students of the faculty of medical Sciences – 700 women and 360 men. Whose average age was 19 and 20 years respectively, writes EurekAlert!.

36% of men were overweight, and 57% of obesity, and women – 42% overweight and 57% obese.

The researchers found that the risk of obesity increased by 43% if the smartphone used for five or more hours a day.

Obesity – what is it?

This is a disease that increases the risk of various diseases such as heart disease, type II diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, certain types of cancer cancer, osteoarthritis and asthma.

Most often obesity is caused by consumption of food with high caloric value, combined with lack of physical activity.

All due to the fact that students are twice as likely to have consumed more sugary drinks, fast food, sweets, snacks and decreased physical activity.

26% percent of participants with overweight and 4.6% of obese people, spent more than five hours using their device.


Holding too much time in front of the smartphone increases a sedentary lifestyle, reduces the physical loads.

Obesity – causes

• passive lifestyle with low physical activity;
• genetic disorders of enzymatic activity;
• excess intake of fat, carbohydrates, salt, alcohol and sugary drinks, eating at night, etc.;
• overeating psychogenic;
• physiological status (pregnancy, menopause);
• lack of sleep, stress, hormonal and psychotropic medicines

And all this increases the risk of premature death, diabetes, heart disease, various cancers, osteo-articular discomfort and musculoskeletal symptoms.
