Brazilian scientists are developing “electronic noses” for selection of the most ripe and juicy fruit.

According to the publication, researchers from Federal technological University in Parana and state University of Ponta Grossa in Brazil has developed a new system of “electronic nose”.
“Even in a big garden of fruit on the same tree can ripen at different times. Sometimes at harvest erroneously selected green fruit that has a negative impact on sales and the reputation of the farmer”, explains the representative of the Federal technological University Sergio Luiz Stevan.

Some fruits, for example peaches emit vapor molecules, called volatile organic compounds (VOCS).
“We know that volatile organic compounds differ in the number and type depending on the different phases of fruit growth. Our device allows monitoring of ripeness of the fruit, depending on the concentration and type of volatile organic substances,” he says.
The researchers say that their “electronic nose” has several advantages over existing methods of determining the maturity. He conducts analysis in real time in an open environment and does not require direct contact with the fruit.
A system of “electronic nose” has a set of gas sensors that are sensitive to certain VOCS. Recognition algorithm of smell is used to classify each unique combination of molecules of VOCS associated with the three stages of ripening peaches (unripe, ripe, overripe).
Data is stored in on the SD card and transmitted via Bluetooth or USB to a computer for further analysis.
