On Friday, January 3, in the Rivne region died last participant of the first battle of UPA against German occupiers, 94-year-old Stepan Bakunas (nee Alexander Smalyukh).

Bakunas was shot hundreds of “Boxes” – the first of hundreds of Ukrainian rebel army and participant in the first battle of the UPA, against the German occupation and the liberation in February 1943 in vladimirets. Also Smalyukh participated in a battle with NKVD troops near the river Bober in Berezovskom area. Was sentenced by a Soviet court to 10 years in the camps.

“Born Stepan Sidorovich 27.08.1925 year in Tynna village, SARNENS’kyi district, and that in the estate of his parents on the farm Netusa, in October 1942, he founded the first seminar entitled “the Cold Yar”, for the elders of the future combat units of the OUN (b).
