Former American boxer Pernell Whitaker died in the hospital due to injuries received in the accident.
The evening of July 14 a 55-year-old Pernell got hit by a car. The driver of the car fled the scene and waited for police to arrive. The former athlete was taken to a hospital in Norfolk, Virginia, but doctors were unable to save him.
Whitaker is considered one of the best boxers of defensive style in history. In addition to the championship belts in four divisions, Pernell won the Olympic gold medal in 1984.
In 2006, Whitaker has entered into international Boxing hall of fame. Only Pernell won 40 fights, with four defeats and one draw result.
The authoritative Ring magazine recognized Whitaker is the best boxer in 1989 and in 2002 put it at tenth place in the list of the hundred best boxers over the last 80 years.
