On the eve of inauguration of newly elected Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, around the date is a continuing hot debate, the site “Today” recalls the memorable inauguration of the procedure of the previous Ukrainian presidents.
Leonid Kravchuk, 1991
The inauguration of the first President of Ukraine took place on 5 December 1991. Experience of holding similar events in Ukraine was not, so the ceremony was held modestly and not without roughnesses.
First, Leonid Kravchuk in Parliament has put the presidency, and after the oath he had to sit in the chair of speaker. Secondly, when at the inauguration Anthem of Ukraine sang units, because at that time the text of the hymn has not yet been approved. Thirdly, the approved of the Constitution of Ukraine is also not yet exist, so the right hand Kravchuk put on the heart and the left hand on the Constitution has no existing Republic of the USSR and acts on state sovereignty.
Subsequently, Leonid Kravchuk recalled that the idea advanced to take the oath on the Peresopnytsia gospel, as the most ancient Shrine of Ukraine, said the Deputy of the Lviv region Roman Lubkivsky (ex-Ambassador of Ukraine in Czech Republic, died in 2015).
The future President on inauguration day was still in the status of MP.
“It was in the first Parliament. We were all completely different: there were red Directors, as we were called, and dissidents are real… And it was very hot at times, but it was the only Parliament whose election is not influenced by money,” recalled the MP to eight convocations Yuliy Ioffe in a special material on the website, “Today,” “the inauguration of the President of Ukraine: celebrations of Kuchma, Yushchenko and euphoria the case of Yanukovych.”
“Basically, in layman considered that the transition from the country’s public deficit to capitalism, to the country peace in abundance and begin to live in developed countries… And the election of a President and his inauguration took place in the expectation that things will get better and we begin to live” – told Yuliy Ioffe.
Leonid Kuchma, 1994
The first inauguration of Leonid Kuchma took place in the same scenario as that of Kravchuk. July 19, 1994, the new President stood behind the podium, spoke the oath of the President, his right hand was lying on the Peresopnytsia gospel. And similarly, has not done without overlays.
It was planned that after the completion of the official part the newly elected President will walk to the Mariinsky Palace, where he would have met the first President. Shaking hands, a commemorative photo and a short interview of the former and the future presidents – it had to look at the scenario. But the oath in the Parliament was very fast, and Kravchuk simply does not have time to arrive on time. In the end, Kuchma had to wait for Kravchuk in the street, talking to people who gathered under Raidou.
Although Mr. Kuchma concluded – following the inauguration took place in concert hall “Ukraine”, the event will be long remembered.
“I remember the inauguration in the Parliament and is remembered very clear the parade and the transfer of power near the presidential Administration”, – shared with “Today” memories of the former people’s Deputy Vasyl Hrytsak.
“First, there was a full house. As for foreign guests, they were so many that nobody knows everybody. The hall was filled to overflowing. I was sitting at the very top, where the journalistic box. Miraculously managed to pass. No free space was not. It was all very majestic, solemn, everyone was happy. I felt the Supreme spirit of patriotism and pleasure from the fact that the elections were peaceful… most of all I remember a full house and a full lobby,” said Hrytsak.
Leonid Kuchma, 1999
The second inauguration of Leonid Kuchma was held on 30 November 1999 in the Palace “Ukraine”. Before his second inauguration Kuchma approved the presidential regalia: Kolar (men’s jewelry in the form of a necklace), official seal, Mace and the presidential standard of the President of Ukraine. All these jewelry, in fact, was given to Kuchma’s second inauguration.
“Then there was greater disagreement about where to hold the inauguration in the hall of the Parliament or in the Palace “Ukraine”. Why has decided in “Ukraine”? Insisted the President personally. I then personally talked with Leonid Danilovich. And we talked about it. He said: “I said it would be “Ukraine”! I wanted to invite not only people’s deputies. It is obvious that all the Verkhovna Rada was there…. I wanted to invite governors, the public, that is, to represent the whole of Ukraine, to make more people see this celebration,” recalled the former people’s Deputy Vasyl Hrytsak.
The inauguration ceremony, he said, was even more solemn than in 1994, plus we have conventional the dress code.
“I was on the balcony of the concert hall “Ukraine”. Remember all the nuances. It was all in seconds. In my opinion, even in the hall was dress code: dark jacket, white shirt and dark tie, no flowers. On the balcony it was the same and it was really very solemnly. Declared all the presidents. The President of the Russian Federation was not, and many presidents have been – Slovakia, Lithuania, Poland, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan. Aliyev was, as I remember, and many others, including representatives of the West at the level of President, Prime Minister,” – said hrycak.
Viktor Yushchenko, 2005
The inauguration of the third President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko took place on 23 January 2005. The official part was held in the Verkhovna Rada, after which Yushchenko went to independence. In the Central square of the country gathered about half a million people.
“Yushchenko took the oath of office directly on the Maidan, which came together with a large number of people. It was the first time a President took the oath publicly,” said MP Andriy Pavlovskiy.
In a sign of peace, the President launched into the sky a flock of white doves, which, however, did not really want to fly: some of them took off and hid under the roof.
Meanwhile, the capital near the metro there was a dozen tents of Yushchenko’s supporters. The inhabitants stated that they will leave only after the inauguration. Also near the main post office left four tents of supporters of Yanukovych, who said he will stand, as they say. At the same time on the hill in front of the October Palace, a group of revolutionary drummers beat out rhythms on metal drums. Thus, according to them, they expressed support for Yushchenko.
Evening policies continued the celebration in the Palace “Ukraine” and the Ukrainian house. On the independence festivities ended with fireworks.
Viktor Yanukovych, 2010
The fourth President Viktor Yanukovych was sworn in on 25 January 2010. Before the ceremony Yanukovych in Kiev-Pechersk Lavra was blessed by the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox arkiv Kirill, who specially arrived in Kiev. On arrival in Parliament, the incident happened – before Yanukovych, who hurried to the meeting of Parliament, began to close the door. The situation was saved by a guard of honor, the soldiers pushed the door and gave her to slam the nose of future President.
According to the memoirs of former MP Vasyl Hrytsak, the information about embarrassment with the door dispersed among MPs very quickly.
“He has reached the podium, began the official ceremony, and the hall parted, the door closed. At the time of passage of the inauguration we already knew about it. Information passes from row to row, someone saw it and 15 minutes later, all members knew that there was the incident with the door. I personally didn’t pay any attention to the prejudices do not believe,” said Hrytsak
In the Parliament all passed on the thumb – the oath, the receipt of regalia and certificates of the President. It Yanukovych busily put it in the breast pocket.
Petro Poroshenko, 2014
For the inauguration of Petro Poroshenko, which took place on 7 June 2014, Kiev was preparing seriously. Was involved in almost all power division: Ministry of internal Affairs, SBU, National guard, state emergency service, police and even snipers and militiamen in mufti, wrote the website of “Today” in a special material “the Inauguration of Poroshenko in Kiev: heat, unprecedented security measures and applause.”
In the morning the city center near the government quarter was blocked. Traffic on the street Grushevskogo were prohibited from crossing Moscow near the metro station “Arsenal” and to the European area. Along the roadway on the Grushevsky street leading to the Verkhovna Rada, where he took a solemn meeting was arranged for a cordon of security forces. And the closer to Parliament – the thicker was the number of law enforcement officers. Near the intersection of Hrushevsky and Lipski they were already two meters away from each other.
Diplomatic motorcades started arriving at Parliament at about 9 am. Cars accompanied by traffic police drove up on Grushevskogo and Institutskaya partially blocked. After disembarkation of passengers, the car drove away to the Cabinet. Just on the inauguration of Petro Poroshenko arrived 20 presidents and delegations from more than 50 countries.
Traditionally, the inauguration of Petro Poroshenko is also not without incidents. Before the newly elected President from the heat and fatigue, fell the honor guard of soldiers in the capital was +30 this morning, and in the square before the Parliament mercilessly hot sun.
The second part of the inauguration of the fifth President – a ceremony of honor held at St. Sophia square, where it was also very hot.
