Lac-Megantic counselor charged with sexual assault

The councilor of the Fatima district of Lac-Mégantic Denis Roy will have to answer for sexual acts in court.
The 67 – year – old man will be charged on Thursday at the Lac – Mégantic courthouse with a sexual assault allegedly committed on January 26, 2018.

Denis Roy is said to have sexually touched a young man around him. The alleged victim was of age at the time of the actions alleged against the municipal councilor

A publication ban prevents the disclosure of information about the alleged victim, so as not to identify them.

It was the Sûreté du Québec’s Major Crime Division in Estrie that led this investigation into the actions allegedly committed by Denis Roy.

Arrested in April

The latter was arrested in April by the Sûreté du Québec. He was released on a promise to appear with the formal condition of not contacting the alleged victim.

Physical evidence and various testimonies were gathered before the charges were authorized by the prosecuting attorney, Isabelle Dorion.

Defense lawyer Julie Beauchemin is scheduled to appear for her client on Thursday, without the latter needing to report to the Lac-Mégantic courthouse as required by law.

Statement of duties

The Mayor of Lac-Mégantic Julie Morin does not want to comment on the filing of this accusation against a member of the city council she leads out of respect for the judicial process and the people involved.

“We are waiting for a legal opinion to know the different options for the municipality following the filing of these criminal charges. This is the first time such a situation arises, so we must analyze it with our lawyers, “explains the mayor of Lac-Mégantic who can not confirm if Denis Roy will be removed from office for the duration of the legal proceedings brought against him.

Denis Roy has lived in Lac-Mégantic for thirty years. He served as General Manager of the City from 1981 to 1987.

He was elected in the November 2017 municipal elections in the Fatima district.
