A new type of laser printer: this time the text will be burned – literally – on paper, not stamped. The development was created by the staff and students of the science laboratory of the Technological University of Delft, the Netherlands. For future customers, this means lower overhead costs – no longer need to buy new ink cartridges.

Vendas Chandrasekar, project officer: “There is a special type of laser that allows to make this operation. Initially had problems because I burned the paper through, and if the intensity of the laser beam was insufficient, then traces on paper almost did not remain. We managed to arrest these shortcomings, and the quality of printed text does not cause any doubts as intensity: precisely the same black color as when you use the cartridge with high quality ink”.

The most difficult was to balance the intensity of the laser beam, the frequency of the radiation, it was necessary to avoid charring of the paper, and at the same time to achieve clarity of color.

Aurele Adam, Professor of the Technological University of Delft, “So now we can responsibly say that our paper is not burnt, and printed in such a way the text does not differ from usual, created using the normal”printer.

The eagle was in command of those who have perfected a special laser gun, setting it so that the laser beam was powerful but not enough to burn the paper through.

So it is reflected from mirrors. Then the beam repeatedly passes through the resonator, causing it induced transitions. The radiation may be both continuous and pulsed. As a result, we have achieved the desired font color”.

The laser radiation can be continuous, have constant power, it can be pulsed, when it reaches extremely large peak power.
In this case, as said by the developers, the use of laser technology will lead to lower costs, and therefore, this type of printer may be in demand in almost every sphere of life.

Arno van der Veen, commercial Director of the project: “in this case We are looking for producers, because the market may be busy pretty quickly. We, however, know that we are coming to them for work: they produce and cartridges too. And then the cartridge is unnecessary. And actually, beyond that is called from the game. But we’re talking about that cheapens the whole production process of printers and therefore, the margin of income will continue. Plus, do not forget that this type of production is much friendlier to the environment, and the used cartridge is not required to be utilized, and this procedure is also included in the scheme overhead.”

The current volume of the market of consumables for printers is estimated at $ 14 billion. And only a third of those sold and used cartridges recycled, to reduce the load on the environment.
