The film “Leviathan” adopted a broad international audience for “cheers”, awarded at the Cannes film festival and received the award “Golden globe” has become one of the biggest cinematic events of the year.

“Leviathan” by Andrey Zvyagintsev are the successors of cultural traditions of Russian critical realism

Producer Alexander Rodnyansky, without whom the tape would not appear on the light, and answering questions from Euronews.

*Elena Karaeva, euronews:
“Today you cooperate with Andrey Zvyagintsev, this is your second joint project, the tape was nominated for “Oscar” in the category “Best film of the year in a foreign language”, and even before official entering the Russian screen the film was highly appreciated abroad. There are those who exalt the tape, and there are those who it considers opportunistic Russophobia and conscious evil parody of contemporary Russian mores. What would you say to your opponents?”*

Alexander Rodnyansky:
“Rather, the debate is about the country and the ways of its development than about the film. The film itself and its author, Andrey Zvyagintsev, it seems to me, are the successors of cultural traditions of Russian critical realism. The film, Andrey Zvyagintsev are, so to speak, on the shoulders of giants of Russian literature. The picture, in my opinion, is not connected neither geographical nor time limits. This, perhaps, may explain her huge success in almost all countries where it was shown: from Korea, India, the Islamic countries to the United States, Britain and France.”

*Elena Karaeva, euronews:
“So there is a scale of values in common which unites and Russian cinema, and cinema of Europe, cinema of the world?”*

Alexander Rodnyansky:
“I think the Russian culture is an integral part of European culture, and Russian cinema has always been an important part of European cinema, and artists such as Sokurov, Zvyagintsev is the same, the same Lungin, Teacher, Konchalovsky and many others – certainly European filmmakers.
They not only share the scale of human values that they share, including the European system of coproduction.”

*Elena Karaeva, euronews:
There is kinohudozhnika can’t touch either because of internal censorship, or they are officially taboo?*

Alexander Rodnyansky:
“Perhaps officially taboo topics no. The question is self-censorship caused by circumstances commercialization of the entire film, “leaching” of big screen cinema room showing great movies on the big screen “washout” of those genres that dominated the years: drama, romance, all that is relevant to the author’s cinema, historical film, the spy tape – all is all gone.

In accordance with this self-censorship is still driven by the desire to meet with the audience. In this sense, film-making, it seems to me, not only in Russia – come or come not the easy times. The output will probably help to find a network”

*Elena Karaeva, euronews: There is a theory that the film “Leviathan” posted to the network without your consent. Or is it?*

Alexander Rodnyansky:
“For us it would be a kind of re-evaluation of our strategic opportunities.”

*Elena Karaeva, euronews:
“If the film is awarded the prize “Oscar”, it will be for you personally a springboard for future projects or is it summarizing?*

Alexander Rodnyansky:
“In addition to professional vocation, which is always important and nice award of this level brings the main thing – it gives life to the film, draws it to the attention of those for whom the film, in our case – “Leviathan” – was done, that is the audience. In our case, of course, the Russian first and foremost. And foreign too. The award will bring them together for viewing in cinemas.”
