Today in the Luxembourg public transport – Railways (with the exception of travel in the first class), buses (except for some night buses) and tram – was free.
As explained in the Ministry of sustainable development of the Duchy which structure included the Department of transport, such measures had previously taken separate cities, but they first overran the territory of a single country, reports DW.
According to the plan of the authorities the move is designed to unload roads from cars. Every day, about 200 thousand people from Germany, France, Belgium travel to work in Luxembourg.
The changes, which the authorities called “an important social measure”, will affect almost 40 percent of households, said AFP. Absolutely free travel will require additional costs in the amount of 41 million euros a year to be received through tax levies.
The area of Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is 2 590 square kilometres, the population is 607 thousand people.
