The leaders of Germany and France stated the importance of achieving EU unity on the question of adoption of the plan to rebuild the economy. In may, they offered to take on the financial markets with 500 billion euros under the guarantee of the EU.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel (Angela Merkel) said about the importance of the unity of the positions of France and Germany in adopting the European plan of financial assistance to overcome the effects of a pandemic coronavirus. If Germany and France are in agreement, it does not mean the unity of Europe, but if they don’t get along with each other, with the unity of Europe will have problems, said Merkel on Monday, June 29, after a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron at the residence of the German government in Berlin.
According to the Chancellor, Berlin and Paris when discussing the programme of economic recovery, the EU can contribute to “provide a positive impetus to the movement in the right direction for the European future”.
For its part, the macron insists on cash assistance in the recovery of the EU economy. According to him, in July it is necessary to achieve unity regarding the financial part of this plan. “This is our first task,” – said the head of the French state.
In may, Merkel and macron took the initiative, according to which the Commission should take in the financial market loans to 500 billion euros under the guarantees of the EU and to distribute them in the form of subsidies between the most affected countries and sectors of the economy. The implementation of this plan is possible only with the consent of all 27 EU countries.
This proposal is not agreed by several EU countries. Thus, Austria, the Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden oppose the increase in the EU budget and total debt, believing that these measures will allow the less disciplined and weaker EU countries to benefit at the expense of their more powerful partners.
