German Chancellor Angela Merkel rejected the words of the President of France Emmanuel Makron that NATO is in a coma.
Such an attack unnecessary, said Merkel after a meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in Berlin on Thursday, 7 November, reports UNN with reference to DW.
“The French President chose hard words. I’m so cooperation with NATO does not see”, – said Merkel and added that from the German point of view, transatlantic partnership is indispensable.
At the same time, the head of the German government did not deny that the Alliance has problems, and stressed that the rapprochement with NATO is necessary. Stoltenberg, in turn, warned to drive a wedge between the US and Europe.
We will remind, earlier the same day in an interview with the British edition of The Economist macron said that due to the lack of the leading role of the U.S. NATO “is in a coma.” He believes that “what we experience is the brain death of NATO”. According to him, the US President Donald trump “doesn’t share our ideas of the European project”. The President of France expressed the view that the behavior of the US administration points to signs that the country “turns its back on us”. An example of such behavior macron called trump’s decision to withdraw American troops from the North of Syria. Also the macron noted that the European members of the Alliance “needs to rethink what is NATO in light of the obligations of the United States.”
