New swine flu virus. Whether the world faces another pandemic?

Chinese scientists the study have discovered a new virus of swine flu H1N1 G4. If he’s dangerous to humans and can cause a new pandemic?

Chinese scientists from the universities of Beijing and Shandong conducted a study among farmers who raise pigs to establish the extent of the high risk of human infection with swine flu. As shown by the results of the study, a tenth of farmers contracted the H1N1 virus G4. But a new wave of swine flu, caused by them, it failed.

However, scientists warn that “systematic monitoring of viruses found in pigs, it is very important to prevent potential pandemics and prepare for it.” And people who raise pigs, or work in enterprises for production of meat products, must undergo a medical examination, recommend the authors of the study.

What scientists say about the new swine flu virus

The results of this study were published in the American journal PNAS, the official publication of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States. After the publication of American scientist, a biologist at the University of Washington Carl Bergstrom wrote in his Twitter that a new strain of virus which causes swine flu H1N1 G4, will not cause a pandemic. “Nothing indicates that G4 H1N1 is transmitted from person to person. Although this virus is spreading in the world within 5 years”, – explained his insights Bergstrom.

However, scientists are worrying that the new virus contains some genes that make him a “candidate for the occurrence of a pandemic”. New G4 H1N1 virus is related to the known swine flu virus H1N1, which in 2009 has spread worldwide, and avian influenza.

In the period from 2011 to 2018, after the who announced that swine flu pandemic is officially over, Chinese scientists tested pigs in 10 provinces of the country and was able to identify 179 strains of swine flu virus and isolate them.

In 2016, scientists have found that the new H1N1 virus G4 dominates in pigs. But they could make sure also that the virus can multiply in the respiratory tract of a person. After conducted on ferrets in experiments, it became clear that this virus is transmitted by airborne droplets and causes infectious diseases.

Than the swine flu virus dangerous to humans

In humans who recover from other types of flu, not the vaccine produces immunity against swine flu. The researchers conducted serological testing of the 338 people who are engaged in cultivation of pigs, on the presence in the body of the virus. At 10.4 percent of them, the virus was detected. Among the entire Chinese population of new swine flu virus H1N1 G4 was detected in 4.4 percent. But as scientists, it is not proof that the virus is transmitted from person to person.

Of concern to scientists is the fact that a new virus could mutate and become dangerous to humans. In this regard, Professor of veterinary medicine at the University of Cambridge James wood draws attention to the fact that wild animals that are also able to live at home and whose meat people eat can be a source of viruses capable of causing pandemic.
