At the talks in Berlin, the foreign Minister criticized the gas pipeline project, and its German counterpart – the extraterritorial U.S. sanctions against companies involved in its implementation.
The situation in the Donbass, the agreement between Moscow and Kiev for further transit of Russian gas to the EU through Ukraine and US sanctions against the construction of the pipeline “Nord stream – 2” were the main topics at the talks of the foreign Ministers of Germany and Ukraine on December 20 in Berlin.
The sixth winter of the military in the Donbass
At the final press conference, the foreign Minister of Germany Heiko Wt (Heiko Maas) called “success” for the fact that after a three year break of the summit in “channel format”. Achieved in the Paris agreements, he believes the outcome in the first place, says the IAU, “the courageous actions of Ukraine”.
Particularly important, he believes two things: first, a sincere will of all parties, including Russia, to respect the agreements reached, and, secondly, their desire to find solutions for still open questions. The Minister had in mind in the first place the problem of the future status of the territories in the East of Ukraine, not under the control of Kiev, as well as the implementation of “formula Steinmeier”.
In the East of Ukraine begins military sixth winter, said the Mas and added that “we want to do all that this winter has been for people there the last war.”
The agreement on gas transit and Ukrainian gas transport system
Both Ministers welcomed the agreement reached yesterday in Berlin at the trilateral talks in Moscow, Kiev, the EU – principle agreement on the further transit of Russian gas to the EU via the Ukrainian gas transportation system. Vadim pristayko while thanking Germany, which, along with the European Commission brokered gas talks between Russia and Ukraine. “We are very pleased and grateful to the German side,” he said.
As for the gas pipeline “Nord stream – 2”, the attitude to this project, as well as extraterritorial U.S. sanctions against companies involved in its implementation in Berlin and Kyiv are different.
“We believe that the Ukrainian gas transport system is able to supply gas to consumers in the European Union – said Pristayko. And, he added, in amounts three times greater than the capacity of the pipeline “Nord stream – 2” which, according to the Minister, “the project is rather political than economic.”
The effectiveness of U.S. sanctions depends on their timing
In Berlin, this assessment does not agree. Here the project is considered commercial, even though they have a political component. “Of course, we discussed the topic of “Nord stream – 2″ and American sanctions, said Heiko Mas told reporters. – And you, of course, no surprise that the existence of differences between us in evaluating this issue.”
The German foreign Ministry condemns the extraterritorial US sanctions, but realizes that to oppose them will not. “I have no illusions that we will have any formal legal measures to prevent these sanctions,’ said Mac, in reply to journalists ‘ questions. In the final analysis everything will depend on how these sanctions will be imposed in practice, and in what time frame”.
