Over the past century, with a small average healthy body temperature in humans slightly decreased – scientists attribute this to the slowing of metabolism in modern comfortable living conditions.
Just enter in a search engine request “normal body temperature” to get the result of: 37 °C. But it seems that this classic figure is outdated.
This conclusion comes Julie Parsons and her colleagues from the Medical school of Harvard University, article which was published in the journal eLife, reports Naked Science.
Average healthy body temperature is 37 °C (strictly speaking, from of 36.2 to 37.5 °C) in 1851 was received by the German physician Carl Wunderlich. However, recent data and then point to the lower numbers. These trends – for example, people in the US – and appreciated the creators of the work. Their development scientists associated with the environmental changes caused by industrial revolution of past centuries, and with related changes in normal human physiology.
Scientists have considered three broad source of information about the measurement of body temperature US citizens, belonging to different historical epochs.
The authors summarized more than 677 thousands of individual measurements of the temperature. After the statistical processing of these data, the downtrend was confirmed. The calculations showed that the normal body temperature decreased rapidly, corresponding to 0.03 °C per decade.
Of course, these results can be associated with the improvement of technology of temperature measurement. However, dividing the participants of the first sample by age, the researchers found the same decrease, although all the measurements were carried out using the same tools available at the time.
This trend scientists attribute the General decrease in the activity of metabolism. In their opinion, the development of hygiene and medicine, availability of food and domestic comfort led to the weakening of chronic inflammatory processes, against which flowed the life of past generations. Dissemination heating systems in homes also reduced the normal energy consumption of the body, and consequently its temperature.
