Megadyuny created by winds from 5 to 50 meters high.

Scientists obtained the first evidence of the movement of large dunes on the Martian surface – waves of sand up to a height of 50 meters, traveling on the planet. Their movement sluggish but steady, and before him no one noticed.

Megadyuny created by winds from 5 to 50 meters in height. On the surface of the red planet a lot, and they have long known thanks to satellite images, but no one had noticed that they move.

Before the sand dunes of Mars, which is much larger earth, explained as the result of climatic effects in the past. But a new study by astronomers from the Observatory of Capodimonte in Italy found that these massive hills migrate from place to place in the two Equatorial zones of the planet.

Thus, these formations are not immune structure, but “living” process that is going on right now. Unlike earth’s sand dunes, they can migrate in all directions. This indicates the presence of strong winds that change the terrain of the planet.

However, moving Martian dunes really sluggish – only 12-19 cm per year. As explained by a senior research fellow Simone Silvestro in an interview with Inside Science, to capture the motion of these structures helped 10 years of satellite observations.

Scientists explain that the movement of Martian sand dunes will not interfere with the people who will probably ever come of this planet, since the movement of the particles will not even notice – so it is slow.
