The main objectives of the mission is to study the formation of the system of Pluto and Charon,and study the Kuiper belt, as well as other processes occurring at early stages of evolution of the Solar system.
Amy Shire Teitel, an employee of the mission “New Horizons”program: “the mission was designed for the study of several space objects and planets. They include not only Pluto, but Charon, and those heavenly bodies that are in the Kuiper belt”.
In addition to the scientific equipment on Board the spacecraft is a capsule with a portion of the ashes of astronomer Clyde Tombaugh, discoverer of Pluto
The objectives of the mission include mapping of the surface of Pluto and Charon, and study the Geology and morphology of Pluto and Charon, and search for rings and new satellites of Pluto.
Mission “New Horizons” is designed for 15-17 years.
