Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Antarctica was “discovered by the Russian seamen”.
He stated, opening of the naval parade on the day of the Navy of the Russian Federation on the Admiralty embankment in St. Petersburg, reports the observer.
According to Putin, this year marks the 200th anniversary of the opening of the Russian sailors Antarctica.
“Russia has forever become known as a great sea power. And this historical continuity unbreakable”, – he stressed.
Recall that Antarctica was opened on 16 (28) January 1820, the Russian expedition led by Thaddeus Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev, which on the sloops “Vostok” and “peace” came to the shelf glacier (now glacier Bellingshausen).
Two days later (30 January) the mainland had reached the British expedition under the leadership of Irishman Edward Bransfield.
