French carmaker Renault, and the Italian-American automaker Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) are in talks about possible mergers in a number of areas and cooperation on a parity basis. This was reported Sunday on its website, the newspaper The Wall Street Journal, reports

According to sources the newspaper, the talks, which occurred on Sunday, discussed various options of interaction, including development of technology of electric cars, establish joint production of cars and the compatibility of the final product. The sides are studying the feasibility of the merger on a parity basis, which will lead to the formation of a new auto giant with a capitalization of $ 37 billion and a production volume of nearly 9 million cars and pickups per year. Such an enterprise takes third place in the world after the German Volkswagen and Japanese Toyota, but will pass the us by General Motors, said the publication.

According to sources, Renault and Fiat Chrysler also discuss the option of exchange of shares. However, this option is intended to lay the groundwork for the merger at a later stage. Previously, the possibility of a merger was reported by the Financial Times and AFP.

The Wall Street Journal does not preclude that the parties, if successful, will prepare a joint statement. It can be published Monday morning.
