Russia has blocked remote voting in the UN General Assembly

Russia, along with Venezuela, Iran and Cuba violated the so-called silence procedure during the adoption of the initiative on the introduction of provisional regulations on remote voting of the UN General Assembly during a pandemic.

The position of Ukraine on this issue commented on the Agency by the permanent representative of Ukraine to the UN, Sergei Kislitsa.

“Ukraine is concerned that today failed to adopt a decision on introduction of temporary procedure for remote voting in the General Assembly of the UN,” – said the diplomat.

He stressed that in the current emergency and a pandemic, “the most democratic principal organ of the UN – the General Assembly remains ogranichennym in the execution of its powers under the UN Charter”.

Next week the UN will mark the anniversary of the adoption of its Charter. In this regard, the permanent representative of Ukraine stressed that the provisions of the basic document “not only ignored, but also flagrantly violated one permanent member of the Security Council”.

As noted Sorrel, today’s actions of Russia proved that the harmful practices of their manipulation provisions of the UN Charter and the restriction of legal capacity of the UN bodies was applied to the General Assembly. And this body seeks to balance the powers of the security Council and decide in a democratic way, any issues discussed in the UN, including in the field of maintenance of international peace and security.

“Ukraine together with our partners and other progressive members of the Organization will endeavour to resume full activities to the General Assembly at a time when the international community expects of her decisive and practical steps to combat the pandemic, as well as other problems that only worsened during COVID-19”, – said the permanent representative of Ukraine to the United Nations.
