Russian authorities have lifted a ban on Telegram

Российские власти отменили запрет на Telegram

The Russian authorities have abandoned attempts to block citizens access to Telegram. Thursday, June 19, announced the lifting of the ban. Russian media have interpreted this move as humiliating for Putin. Telegram has almost half a billion users worldwide, and attempts to restrict access to encrypted messenger in the Russian government failed.

Roskomnadzor, which replaced the KGB as the Russian supervisor over communications in the country, said that the ban was canceled due to the fact that the Telegram founder Pavel Durov is now ready for moderation and elimination of extremist propaganda. Reported Decrypt.

Alexander Gorbunov, cryptotriton and author of the popular political blog StalinGulag, Telegram, identified unlock as an ideological victory.

“The government couldn’t do to restrict access to Telegram; team messaging was much more competent and technically prepared than a government Department”,

he said.

A Moscow court has imposed a ban in April of 2018, after Durov refused to cooperate with authorities and to share the encryption keys – that would allow them to access user data.

The ban has caused problems with thousands of representatives of Russian business. While Roskomnadzor struggled with the Telegram, he forbade more than 16 million IP addresses offline and accidentally cut off many businesses from the Internet. But the Russians found ways to circumvent the bans by using the Telegram.

Lawmakers introduced a bill on the release of the program earlier this month because the ban has compromised efforts to disseminate information about the pandemic coronavirus.

Earlier this month, Durov announced improved tools for identifying and removing extremist content on the platform that has bothered governments all over the world.

Like Telegram, Durov is the founder of cryptocurrency TON project, which was suspended in may after the Commission on securities and stock exchanges of the USA has banned it from running. Durov founded Vkontakte, the Russian equivalent of Facebook. However, he was forced to abandon the platform and to leave Russia when he refused to cooperate with the authorities.

Despite the lifting of the ban Telegram, Putin is considering a law to increase the powers of the state for supervision. The plans of the Russian Internet was approved last year, which allowed the censors to block and filter content similar to the Chinese Internet.

As he wrote Coinews, Telegram withdrew his appeal against the Federal court of the United States, which banned the distribution of Gram, stopping the project TON.

The portal Coinews informed that a bill banning the cryptocurrency was proposed by the legislative body of Russia, but he criticized the Ministry of justice of the country. The justice Ministry has criticized the draft law on digital assets, because it creates further uncertainty.
