AC Milan will be hoping they can return to form and remain top of Serie A when they travel to face Sassuolo on Sunday (2pm kick-off).

The Rossoneri are still top of the table, one point clear of rivals Inter Milan, but they have seen that gap reduced in the past two games with consecutive draws and face tough opposition in Sassuolo this weekend.

Sassuolo vs AC Milan build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

Four games ago Sassuolo were considered among the surprise packages for a top four finish, still unbeaten and nestled comfortably near AC Milan and Inter. However, their form in recent weeks have been poor, with just one win, two draws and a first defeat at the hands of Inter.

They are now sixth, five points behind Milan, such is the closeness of Serie A’s summit. And while defeat this weekend will not see them overtaken in sixth, it would allow the likes of Verona, Atalanta and Lazio to close the gap.

But Sassuolo face a Milan side who have drawn their past two games 2-2, against Parma and Genoa. In both games they required late goals to secure a point and keep their unbeaten start going, with Theo Hernandez the injury-time hero against Parma and Pierre Kalulu scoring in the 83rd minute against Genoa.

Now they are hanging onto their spot at leaders, but have a good record against Sassuolo, winning six of the past eight Serie A meetings between the two sides, with two draws.

  • Sassuolo (vs Fiorentina): Consigli; Toljan, Chiriches, Peluso, Rogerio; Obiang, Locatelli*; Berardi, Traore, Boga; Raspadori.
  • AC Milan (vs Genoa): Donnarumma; Calabria, Kalulu, Romagnoli, Dalot; Tonali, Kessie; Castillejo, Calhanoglu, Leao; Rebic.

Sassuolo will be able to call upon winger Lukas Haraslin who served a one-match suspension in midweek, and he could replace Jeremie Boga in attack but Filippo Romagna remains out and Manuel Locatelli is suspended.

Milan, meanwhile, are waiting to hear on the fitness of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Simon Kjaer who have been absent over the past few weeks through respective injuries but could be in contention to return.

Players to watch:

  • Sassuolo: When Sassuolo have required goals this season, they have often relied on Domenico Berardi, and it is likely to be the same again this weekend. The 26-year-old has scored five goals in Serie A so far this season, the joint-most at Sassuolo alongside Francesco Caputo, but he has also provided four assists (nine goal involvements is the most at Sassuolo). But another reason Milan may be worrying about Berardi’s involvement this weekend is because of his record against the Rossoneri. In 12 Serie A appearances against Milan, Berardi has scored eight goals, their worst record when facing any player currently in the competition.
  • AC Milan: Five Milan players have created at least 10 chances in Serie A so far this season, but Hakan Calhanoglu is some way clear of the rest. While Theo Hernandez is second with 16, Calhanoglu is 30 clear, having created 46 chances for his Milan teammates in Serie A this season, also at least 16 more than any other player in the competition. His performances have seen the 26-year-old linked with a move away from Milan, most notably to Man Utd, who have reportedly been looking to add some creativity to their ranks. However, they look set to miss out on Calhanoglu, with reports claiming the Turkish international is set to sign a new contract at Milan with his current deal up in the summer, which would have opened up the possibility of agreeing a pre-contract at Old Trafford.
