Recently at the summit for Android developers Dev Summit 2018 engineers of Google said that dark (night) mode helps significantly reduce energy consumption and extend the battery life on a single charge. However, it turned out that this advice is not suitable for all phone models.
According to the report, the use night mode to save energy, will be appropriate only for smartphones with AMOLED screens but not for LCD screens, writes ITC.ua.
In confirmation of the words Google gave several comparative graphs with measurements of energy consumption of the example of the original Google Pixel and iPhone 7.
How to use power Google Pixel and iPhone 7 for normal and night mode
One of them shows that after you activate dark mode in Google Maps the amperage on the original Google Pixel is reduced by as much as 63%, but on the iPhone 7, the figure is still 250 mA.
So why include dark mode, you can save power on phones with LCD screens? It’s all in the features of the technology – AMOLED matrices of organic LEDs, which themselves are elements that emit light, and the color black energy almost spent. In the LCD, for its part, uses an additional coating backlight, so power consumption is dependent on brightness.
By the way, recently Samsung unveiled a new interface for smartphones called One UI. One of the features of the shell – support night mode.
