The researchers suggested that the severity of symptoms of depression after divorce may be associated with impaired functional connections of the brain.
The stress associated with the termination of long-term relationships, leads to violations of functional connections in the brain. This, in turn, contributes to the deepening of depression or exacerbation of depressive episodes.
To such conclusion scientists from the Netherlands, Denmark and Spain, who described his observations in the scientific journal NeoroImage: Clinical, writes Gromadska.
Researchers have noted that stressful life events (e.g. loss of a loved one or work or trauma) often result in symptoms of depression and potentially to depressive episodes. However, if people with depression show abnormalities in the functioning of the brain, the reverse mechanism, that is, diagnosis of depression via analysis of the brain – is not yet developed.
Scientists led by Professor of the University of Groningen Sonsoles Alonso Martinez decided to check to what extent the severity of the symptoms of depression is associated with disorders in the brain of people who have experienced separation from a loved one. The study involved 69 volunteers aged 18-25 years who within the last six months broke up with long-term partner or partner (the relationship lasted less than six months).
The researchers suggested that the severity of symptoms of depression after divorce may be associated with impaired functional connections of the brain. To do this, they conducted functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) for each of the participants, focusing on the complex work of the brain, not specific areas.
It was found that the severity of symptoms of depression in participants was associated with reduced brain’s ability to synthesize and process information, as well as with violations of both spatial and temporal perception in the brain. The researchers attributed this to the fact that the areas of the brain that spetsializiruyutsya on the specific tasks lose their “specialty” is probably distributing it between the other sites – and calls this process a stressful situation like a divorce with a loved one.
As a conclusion, a group of researchers believes that the analysis of functional connections of the brain may show that a person is going through depression or a depressive episode associated with the termination of long-term relationship or other stressful event in life.
