Space Agency NASA has announced a new contract with SpaceX Elon musk is on a mission to change the orbit of asteroids. The mission called DART (Double Asteroid Redirection Test), and to perform it will be using the launch of heavy-class Falcon 9.
The details of the mission. As reported by SpaceNews, racketeering Falcon 9 within the mission, DART will start in June 2021 with the Vandenberg air force base in California. The amount of the contract for SpaceX will be 69 million dollars, the cost includes start-up and all related services.
Astronomers plan to study the change of the orbit of a small moon impact. This will help scientists to evaluate the effectiveness of the approach proposed as one of the ways to deflect asteroids that threaten Earth.
SpaceX is proud to continue a successful partnership with NASA to perform this important interplanetary mission. This contract underlines the confidence of NASA in the ability of Falcon 9 to perform critical research tasks, while offering the best value launch in the industry
– said the President of SpaceX, Gwynne Shotwell.
What is known about the DART mission?
This project developed in the applied physics Laboratory of Johns Hopkins University in the framework of NASA on planetary defense. In the experimental mission, the spacecraft will use an electric rocket engine to fly to the asteroid Didim (Didymos). Then DART will face little companion Didim – Digimon (Didymoon) – at a speed of about 6 kilometers per second.
