European countries need to maintain with Russia less intimate relationship than before. This was during a conference on foreign policy and security policy, held in Finland, June 16, said the President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier, writes “Deutsche Welle”.
He stressed that the expectations for the comprehensive partnership with Russia with a growing degree of integration is not justified, and therefore, according to Steinmeier, Germany and Russia “deeply disappointing”.
The German President noted that the conflict in Eastern Ukraine and the annexation of the Crimea Peninsula have a significant impact on relations between Europe and Russia, because this is impossible to do business “as usual”.
Steinmeier expressed the view that it is impossible to silently endorse the fact that the space for freedom of expression of Russian civil society is increasingly shrinking. He believes that the case of the correspondent Russian edition of “Medusa” Ivan Golunova again showed the need “to remain vigilant”.
German President recalled that their own powers of Europe to change Russia limited, you need to realize “in the interests of a more functional partnership.”
