Sweden and Ukraine exchanged experience in the sphere of combating human trafficking

Human trafficking and slavery – is not a medieval but a modern form of violence.

Human trafficking is a very relevant type of crime in modern society. During the year Natspolitsiya of Ukraine opened the 189 crimes of human trafficking. In 159 cases their perpetrators have been identified.

On June 12 discussion: “the Experience of Sweden on combating trafficking and sexual exploitation” with the assistance of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on human rights, national minorities and interethnic relations, which was attended by the Deputy Minister of internal Affairs Tetyana Kovalchuk, head of the Department for combating crimes related to trafficking in human beings (DBSPL) of the National police of Ukraine Artem Krishchenko, Ambassador extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Sweden in Ukraine Martin Hastrom and the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Sweden’s special envoy in the fight against trafficking, Per-Anders Sunesson, as well as representatives of organizations and agencies, dealing with counter-trafficking.

This was reported by the press service of the National police.

Visitors from Sweden told about the main principles of the functioning of the Swedish model of combating sexual exploitation. They focused on the position of Sweden, in zero tolerance towards any form of legalization and decriminalization of pimping. The speakers also presented the Swedish national strategy to combat violence. They said that according to her prostitution and trafficking for sexual purposes is a form of violence. Swedish guests listened to about how to fight human trafficking in Ukraine.

Ukrainian police units to combat trafficking in persons in the current year 189 registered criminal offences under article 149 (trafficking) of the Criminal code of Ukraine. Of these, 91 cases labour exploitation, 69 sexual exploitation, 25 facts of involvement in criminal activity, and 2 cases of trafficking in children and surrogacy.

Pre-trial investigation was completed in 94 of the criminal proceedings in this sphere. Also to date, 205 citizens have been granted the status of victims in criminal proceedings. Among them, 123 were men, 78 women, 2 juveniles and 2 minors.

In addition, for five months of 2019, the police exposed the 16 organized groups operating in the field of human trafficking. Relative to the 15 partners of these groups until the measure of restraint in form of detention.

In the Global slavery index Ukraine occupies 49th place in the ranking of the countries where modern slavery flourishes. According to the organization, Ukraine 286 thousand people live in slave-like conditions, or 6.41 per 1000 people. Among the countries of Europe and Central Asia ranked first, Turkmenistan, Belarus is in second place. Ukraine was on the eighth, and Russia – 11. According to the data in the table by world regions, the absolute number of victims of this phenomenon in Ukraine is 301 thousand. It is noted that the government’s response to the situation is the average for all studied countries.
