Construction of the pipeline will increase Europe’s dependence on Russian gas.
The U.S. state Department once again opposed the construction of the gas pipeline Nord stream-2 from Russia to Europe. The head of the U.S. Department of state Mike Pompeo said during a meeting with Prime Minister of great Britain Teresa may, writes Reuters. “Russian project “Northern stream-2″ project on construction of a pipeline from Russia to Germany cannot be allowed to implement”, – said the head of the state Department during the London visit.
The United States is not the first time as a criticism against the construction of the pipeline “Nord stream-2”. According to the official version due to the fact that it increases Europe’s dependence on Russian gas. In addition, according to American officials, the pipeline construction will complicate the supply of liquefied gas from the us to the EU. However, one of the largest supporters of the construction of the Russian pipeline is Germany.
To date, the pipeline has been constructed about half. Recently Naftogaz sent to the European Commission a complaint against Gazprom. In a statement, the company notes that Gazprom was abusing its market position and asks to take urgent measures to prevent the construction of the pipeline “Nord stream-2”.
Note that now the Russian gas to Europe comes through Ukraine’s gas transit system under a contract that ends on 31 December 2019. A new contract for the transit of Ukraine and Russia have not yet concluded. Services of Russian gas transit to the EU every year bring Ukraine up to $3 billion.
To refuse from Ukrainian pipes, Russia is building gas pipelines bypassing Ukraine: “Nord stream-2” and “Turkish stream”. They will allow Gazprom to supply the same amount of gas in the EU, as now, but without the use of the Ukrainian pipeline.
