“The world is diverse and we need to keep it that way. Every year on may 22 the whole world celebrates the international day of biodiversity. This is another opportunity to draw public attention to urgent problems of preserving diversity of species living on Earth. After all, every living organism plays a role in the ecosystem. Reduction of animal and plant species causing degradation in the ecosystem that is the habitat of the person”, – stated in the message.

It is noted that for the last 400 years on Earth he became 100 species of smaller vertebrates. In addition, on the verge of extinction thousands of species of plants and animals. Researchers believe that the best way to preserve species of animals in the modern world is the creation of protected areas, which include the Chernobyl reserve.

“Over the past decade, the world of flora and fauna of the exclusion zone was significantly more diverse. In General terms, he went back to the species composition that existed in the Polesie region prior to significant human impact”, – stated in the message.

So, now the protected area is home to more than 300 species of vertebrates 410, which generally live in this region. Of these, 75 species (out of 97 possible) listed in the Red book of Ukraine. There are also 14 species of plants are listed in the Red list of the International Union for conservation of nature. In particular, the small bat, river otter, common lynx, European mink, European beaver, corncrake, Triton saltwater, and others.

The reserve includes 1256 species of vascular plants, 120 species of lichen and 20 species of mosses. As well as five plants included in the European red list – the camel geopolity, bladder Campion, Lithuanian, Ukrainian salsify to sinomach Lindemann and sorrel Ukrainian. From the red book of Ukraine in the reserve there are 46 plants.

“Our task is to preserve the living world of the reserve is such a variety in the future”, – summed up the representative of the protected area.
