State specialized enterprise “Chornobyl NPP” has signed a contract with the winning bidder to carry out works on dismantling of unstable structures of the Shelter.
“On July 29 signed the construction contract for the project “New safe confinement. Launch complex-2. The dismantling of unstable structures of the Shelter object, ChNPP in “early” dismantling”, – stated in the message.
It is noted that the contract signed with the company “Ukrstalmontazh,” which became the winner of the auction on the court Prozorro.
The Chernobyl remind that in November of 2016, the new safe confinement covered a the object “Shelter”. The research and examination that were conducted throughout the existence of the Shelter, found a design, the probability of a collapse which is too big. After the 2008 stabilization measures the maximum exploitation of the stable structures were determined until the end of 2023.
According to the implementation Plan for “Shelter” object, the dismantling of these unstable constructions (the so-called “early removal”) shall begin upon acceptance to the operation of the NSC and to be completed by the end of 2023.
The scope of work for the newly signed contract includes three stages. The first and second stages include inspection of the object “Shelter” and carry out project work. Their implementation is necessary for careful planning of dismantling of unstable structures, handling of large amounts of radioactive waste generated, and ensure maximum staff security.
The third stage of the work provides for the purchase and installation of equipment for dismantling and the treatment of dismantled fragments, as well as the early takedown.
“Work will be carried out in conditions of increased nuclear and radiation hazard. In addition, the construction of the “Shelter” built over 30 years ago, have free focus and are held on supports only the force of gravity. Such conditions, together with corrosion processes make the object very difficult to work. To complete the task demolition, Contracting organizations will have to simultaneously dismantle the Shelter and amplify it, because the disassembly of each element increases the risk of a collapse of “Shelter” that will lead to releasing large quantities of radioactive material in the internal volume of the new safe confinement arch,” – said the press service of the ChNPP.
