The EU and NATO put pressure on Macedonia

The doors of the EU for Macedonia will be closed if the results of the referendum on ratification of the agreement with Greece about the renaming of the Republic will be negative. This was stated by European Commissioner for enlargement and neighbourhood policy Johannes Hahn on the eve of his visit to the Former Yugoslav Republic.

His visit to Skopje scheduled for Monday. Khan will become the second senior European official to have visited the Macedonian capital in the last few days after Federica Mogherini.

However, Khan will arrive in Macedonia and the Minister of defence of the USA James Mattis.

Euro-Atlantic prospects and the current state of Affairs in Macedonia and the Balkans were also in the spotlight at the meeting of the Minister of foreign Affairs Nikola Dimitrov with assistant Secretary of state for European and Eurasian Wesson Mitchell on Thursday.

The US is supported by the agreement of Greece and Macedonia. In it we see the possibility of NATO membership to new countries. But the final decision is in the hands of the Macedonians. Washington has a special interest in the Western Balkans. We advocate for prosperity and stability in this important region

Two weeks before the referendum, according to public surveys, approximately 64% of citizens plan to take part in it, and more than 2/3 of them are willing to say “Yes” to joining NATO and the EU.

Albanian Minister of foreign Affairs Ditmir Bushati also visited Skopje and urged the Macedonians to go to a meeting of NATO and the EU by voting for the renaming of the Republic. Because according to him, the agreement is important not only for both countries but the region as a whole. In Macedonia, home to a large number of ethnic Albanians and their voices have a huge impact on the outcome of the referendum.
