The European Commission opened two antitrust investigations against the American company Apple, which intends to assess the possible violation of competition rules in the services of Apple Pay and App Store.

After a preliminary assessment of the situation, the regulator has sparked fears that “the conditions of the integration of Apple Pay into apps for sellers to pay for goods and services may infringe competition and limit consumer choice, and innovation”, writes DW with reference to the statement of the European Commission.

The EC noted that we are talking in particular about what to use for conducting contactless payments NFC module in the iPhone can only Apple Pay.

“As it turned out, Apple sets the terms of how Apple Pay to be used in mobile applications sellers, as well as on their web sites. In addition, the company holds Apple Pay performing payment functions with one-touch on the iPhone”, – said the Deputy Chairman of the European Commission, Margrethe Vestager.

“It is very important to Apple not deprived customers of the benefits that carries with it the use of new payment technologies. In connection with the decision to more carefully evaluate the practices of Apple Pay, as well as their impact on competition,” she said.

In that case, if the regulator finds Apple guilty, it will have to pay a penalty of up to 10 percent of annual revenue, and change business practices.

The second investigation, which the EC announced, for a potential breach to the Apple competition rules of the European Union regarding the use of the developers of the App store. In particular, the regulator will examine the complaints that Apple limits the possibility of promotion in the App Store competing services.

The investigation launched by the European Commission in response to complaints received from the Swedish music streaming service Spotify Technology, as well as an unnamed service electronic and audio books, the statement of the regulator.
