The European Union gave the mandate of the European Commission (EC) to conduct formal trade negotiations with the United States. This is stated in the statement of the EU Council, released on Monday in Brussels.
“Today, Council approved the mandate of the European Commission to start negotiations with the US under the two agreements. Trade agreement on the abolition of customs duties only for industrial goods, excluding agricultural products. And the agreement on conformity assessment, whose goal is the elimination of non-tariff barriers, with the result that companies will be easier to prove that their products meet the technical requirements in the EU and the United States, while maintaining a high level of protection in the EU”, – stated in it.
Earlier, U.S. President Donald trump has confirmed plans to impose duties on goods from the EU in response to EU subsidies to Airbus. The corresponding statement he posted on his Twitter page, adding that this measure would affect imports from the EU in the amount of $11 billion.
