The Pentagon plans to increase allocations for the development and construction of strategic nuclear submarines of new generation.
As noted in the document, on the 2021 fiscal year, which begins October 1, 2020, the defense Ministry will ask for a program to create submarines of class Columbia $4.3 billion to 2.3 billion more than fiscal year 2020. In 2022 fiscal year this amount will increase to $4.46 billion, and in 2024 up to $5 billion.
Report intended for official use were sent to Congress in April. In it, according to Bloomberg, said that the project implementation is slightly behind schedule.
A contract in the amount of $5 billion for the development of Columbia was signed on 21 September last year. The contractor, the Electric Boat company – subsidiary of General Dynamics Corporation. It is assumed that the construction of the first submarine will begin in October 2020.
The Pentagon expects to acquire 12 new submarines, which will have 16 silos for Intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). In January 2017, the Navy estimated the cost of the purchase of the cerebral missile 8.2 billion dollars excluding the cost for the design and documentation for the entire series of submarines of this class. In the combat part of it, is expected to introduce in 2031.
Over the next 30 years, the defense Ministry plans to replace all available strategic submarines of class “Ohio”, bearing 24 ICBM “Trident-2” with nuclear warheads. They are now 14 and the oldest was commissioned in 1983.
According to analysts of the congressional Budget office, the implementation of the entire program, Columbia will need to eventually $313 billion.
