From the beginning of 2017, the ongoing measles outbreak. During that time, nearly 70,000 people in different regions of Ukraine had measles. Among them, children and adults. 26 people died as a result of illness,” says Director of the Department of immunization strategy Public health Center of Ministry of health of Ukraine Oleksandr Zaika.

According to him, the main reason for the measles outbreak is low immunization coverage of the population of Ukraine. Most suffer from measles again in areas where routine vaccination is the smallest.

“Measles is a highly contagious infectious disease caused by a virus. The disease is spread through airborne droplets when a person coughs or sneezes. Measles can get sick all: children and adults,” explains Alexander Zaika.

The disease can be severe and often requires hospitalization. Patients with measles are contagious, they need to be isolated for a long time. The infection can cause complications (pneumonia, encephalitis), lead to disability or death. The virus is easily transmitted from one infected person to a healthy airborne droplets when sneezing, coughs or talks. The measles virus can live in the air and on surfaces for up to two hours after a sick person left the room. 9 out of 10 non-immune people in contact with patients will be infected.

The only reliable method of prevent measles is vaccination. It generates specific immunity, whereby the human body becomes immune to the disease. 2 doses of vaccine to protect against measles. According to the immunization calendar in Ukraine, 12 months are vaccinated against measles, and 6 years of age – scheduled revaccination.

For children up to 18 years of measles vaccination in Ukraine are free. The Ministry of health approved the order on holding free immunization of adults at risk. In particular, we are talking about doctors, teachers, students, military, members of the OOS.

“Do not delay your visit to the doctor to make routine vaccination or catch up vaccinations!” – urges the Department head of the immunization strategy CHP MOZ.

He also explained that measles can be vaccinated in the season of colds and flu.

“If a child or adult feel good, there is no reason to postpone vaccination against measles due to the fact that the country is sick with the flu. Despite the common myth that vaccination does not weaken and does not overload the immune system. By world standards, a slight cold with temperatures up to 38° C are not contraindications for measles vaccination,” – said the expert.

Also CHP MOZ reports that it is for the vaccination of PDA (PDA is a combination vaccine against three diseases: measles, mumps (mumps) and rubella – ed.) in Ukraine use a vaccine Priorix™/Priorix™, a drug manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals s.a, Belgium, and the vaccine “MMR”, produced by Merck Vaccines, USA.

They, like other vaccines included in the immunization schedule, by agreement with the Ministry of health, the state budget buys UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF). Then MOZ reports purchased vaccine to public health departments of the regions, and those in turn – state medical institutions to the citizens of Ukraine can receive the necessary inoculations free of charge.

The MMR vaccine has been used for over 50 years. More than 500.000.000 doses were introduced in more than 100 countries.
