In Germany never promoted field Marshal did not surrender. There was no such thing. However, on 31 January 1942 it happened.
When the 6th army nearly took Stalingrad it would become a point in the great War. Why did the son who led her German field Marshal Paulus considered his father a traitor. He was so sure that his life ended prematurely. However, they killed him not Hitler.
At Paulus had two sons. Senior served in the SS. His military exploits are unknown. Shot in 1970, the year he, finding that the father “sold out to the Communists.”
Junior “pulled military strap” in the army father, a regular army officer. In September 1942, he received a severe wound, was the reserve and went to his mother.
What did the elder son considered his father a traitor?
Wilhelm Paulus (prefix background he could not stand) fought fair enough. In the band of his army there were no mass shootings either military or civilians.
He was the main developer of the plan “Barbarossa”, in which the Soviet Union had to be defeated in 4 weeks. When that failed, Hitler gave him the best in the Reich’s 6th army with the task to capture Stalingrad.
But then in the last meters to the Volga our his teeth and tightly. Then she hit me.
Got “the ring”. Paulus, realizing the situation, turned to Hitler with a proposal to break through from the Volga river. He was ordered to hold Stalingrad until the end.
When the end was already quite a bit, January 30, Hitler sent him an order on conferring the rank of field Marshal. This meant only one thing. One of the German commanders of that rank was never captured. Means shot in the head. Paulus chose to surrender to the red army on 1 February.
He provided decent conditions of captivity. He taught at the Academy of the General staff. In the end, he became one of the main witnesses against the crimes of the Nazis.
His wife did not. She died in 1949. After the capture of Paulus, Hitler did not shoot his family. She did not renounce his father and deprived of their property and titles and sent into exile.
In the GDR honored people had the right to a personal weapon. Died Paulus (note) 1 February 1957. Apparently the heart was not able to survive the collapse of the army on this day.
The eldest son of field Marshal, to his death worried, believing that his father was a traitor.
