The Ukrainian question, including the need for the release by Russia of Ukrainian seafarers and ships, remains on the agenda of relations between the US and Russia, including scheduled for next month the meeting, trump and Putin.
This was in Washington at a conference at the Carnegie endowment for international peace, said the special representative of the US state Department on Ukraine Kurt Volker, UKRINFORM reported.
“As we all remember, last December was planned a meeting of the presidents of trump and Putin in Argentina. It was canceled due to the fact that a week before Russia attacked the Ukrainian Navy, seized the ships and imprisoned sailors by bringing them into the territory of the Russian Federation. So, the meeting was withdrawn, and it was a very good step, I think it was correct,” – said the representative of the state Department.
Since then, he said, Washington has not ceased to insist on the release of the sailors.
Walker recalled that the international Tribunal for the law of the sea ruled on this case in favor of Ukraine. “Russia’s actions in no way correspond to international law, they have no reason to continue to detain the seamen, but they still do it,” stated the American diplomat.
However, according to him, in addition to the need for the release of Ukrainian sailors and ships between Russia and the United States, there are still many unresolved issues that need to be discussed. We are talking about arms control (including nuclear), the situation in Venezuela, Syria, North Korea, a diplomatic confrontation, hostilities in the Donbas, the Crimea annexation.
Therefore, according to Volcker, would be nice if trump and Putin could meet and discuss topics, “to determine whether there is a possibility a little to cool the situation, to find ways where you can act constructively”.
At the same time, the state Department spokesman said: “This is not to say that we are not concerned with Ukraine. We should try to settle all differences between the two great countries.”
As reported, Donald trump in early may, said he plans to meet with Vladimir Putin at the G20 summit, which will be held in late June in the Japanese city of Osaka.
